What is a personalized experience on TikTok?

The content you see and other features you use on TikTok are tailored to you based on your personal preferences or interests, giving you a personalized experience. You have the option to turn off personalization, which may result in you seeing more popular content or content in a different order than how it would be shown if personalization was used in those features.

What are the personalization settings?

There are two types of personalization settings on TikTok:
• Personalized feeds: This setting allows you to turn personalization on or off across your feeds. This includes the For You, Following, and LIVE feeds, Friends Tab, and Shop Tab (in select regions).
• Personalized search: This setting allows you to adjust personalization for your search results and search recommendations.

Both settings are turned on by default, meaning you have the option to turn them off. You can change these settings at any time.

What happens when you turn off personalized feeds and search?

Turning off the personalized feeds setting will show you non-personalized content in the For You, Following, and LIVE feeds, Friends Tab and Shop Tab (in select regions). For example, your Following and Friends feeds may feature content from creators you follow in chronological order. The For You feed will become a Popular feed and serve popular content from your region and internationally. Comments and account recommendations are also not personalized when this setting is turned off.

Turning off the personalized search setting will show you non-personalized search results and recommendations. This will also change suggested search queries and how search results are ranked.

Important things to know about personalization settings:
• If you turn off personalization, we'll no longer show recommended content in feeds and in search. However, your engagement with content will continue to be factored into your preferences, making it so your feeds and searches remain relevant should you turn personalization on again in the future.
• Additionally, adjusting your personalization settings won't affect ads personalization.
